It’s such an
honour for us to join the launching of PETRONAS’ First Solar
Photovoltaic Installation at Suria KLCC. This is
another significant step of green energy technology development in our country.
Malaysian’s single
largest rooftop solar PV installation on a shopping mall in Malaysia - Suria
KLCC had started running since February, which is a joint initiative of
PETRONAS and Mitsubishi Corporation.

Through this collaboration program, Mitsubishi Corporation agreed to provide the funding needed to design and install the system along with its expertise in solar power technologies and infrastructure. The system’s solar panels have been installed in patterns that follow the Islamic architectural and the traditional songket motifs design elements that are common to the PETRONAS Twin Towers. It is clearly visible from the PETRONAS Twin Towers and the surrounding highrise buildings.

The system, which has a nominal output capacity of up to 685 kilowatts which had been installed on the 9,000 square metres roof-top can supply about 30% of Suria KLCC’s power requirements. The installation of the solar system which started in April 2011 had taken only nine months to complete. It was fully commissioned in February this year and is capable of producing more than 600 megawatt-hours of solar energy annually which is equivalent to powering up to 250 households or 7,700 fluorescent light bulbs for 12 hours daily. Amazing figure isn’t it? Just imagine how much more energy can be saved if all shopping malls in Malaysia were to follow suit. There’s no necessary to pay for electricity bill anymore haha.
Moreover, you will say wow for the contribution of this system to our mother earth. The clean energy generated from the system contributes to the greenhouse gas reduction by approximately 360,000 kilogramme carbon dioxide (CO2) per year and will reduce the shopping complex’s green house gas emission.

The six different types of solar technologies installed at a single location in the country have the potential to harness the most energy from the sun. The system provides vital data and information of its applications and performance in Malaysia’s hot and humid weather conditions, which would be useful for future initiatives. It consists of six PV modules, each based on a different type of solar technology, which are:
1. Mono-crystalline silicon
2.
Poly-crystalline silicon
3.
Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin film
4.
Tandem thin film
5.
Copper indium selenium (CIS) thin film
6.
Hybrid heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer (HIT)
And currently PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) is installing solar PV panels on one of its operational facility with the capacity of approximately 200kilowatt per hour that is equivalent to the power needed to power up to 90 households a year. This can reduce greenhouse emission by approximately 138 tons of carbon dioxide per year. This project is expected to be completed soon. While another development of a Solar IPP located in Gebeng, Kuantan with a capacity of 10.02 megawatt is equivalent to the power needed to power up 4,500 households annually and reducing up to 8,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. It is expected to be completed by 1st Quarter of 2014.

The PV Project paves the way for Petronas to continue to explore opportunities in green and renewable energy towards the reduction of greenhouse gasses as part of its effort towards sustainable development. As our Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, YB Dato’ Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui said, the contribution by Petronas with the largest solar PV installation on the rooftop of Suria KLCC is commendable, as it certainly makes a significant contribution towards achieving the long term target. And he hopes other business entities will also emulate this by installing PV panels in their existing buildings or incorporate them in their new buildings. These are the decisive steps to ensure that our energy future is green, sustainable and diverse and that Malaysia uses energy in the most efficient manner.
So let’s look forward for more development for the green industry in our country, and also the world.
